Boreal species that have been sighted here include the Black-Backed and American Three-toed Woodpeckers, Yellow-bellied and Olivesided Flycatchers, and many of the woodland warblers.

Birding

Many waterfowl can be found at Shallow Lake. Look for loons, Bald Eagles, and many duck species.

Shallow Lake Trail: Take the Sucker Brook Bay trail from Uncas Road for 0.9 mile to the intersection with the Shallow Lake Trail. Bear left for Shallow Lake and follow the trail for 1.6 miles to reach the lake.

Sucker Brook Bay Trail: From the Shallow Lake intersection, continue straight (to the northeast). You will pass through a variety of birding habitats and trees downed by summer windstorms and harsh winter snows. You'll reach the Bay at 2.2 miles. You may see woodland warblers, Black-backed Woodpeckers, and Canada Jays.

Getting there

From Route 28, turn north onto Raquette Lake Road (County Road 2) and drive 0.7 mile, passing through the hamlet of Raquette Lake. Then turn left onto Uncas Road. You'll see the campground entrance at 1.9 miles. Travel another mile on Uncas Road to reach the Sucker Brook Bay trailhead on the right (2.9 miles).
